Riding Luxembourg

Luxembourg is small, which makes it easy. In a week you can ride forest gravel in the Ardennes, sandstone paths in the Mullerthal and red-earth trails in the south. Public transport is free, so you can plan a trip without a car.

I rode Luxembourg in four areas. In the north I rode the Ardennes around Esch-sur-Sûre and Diekirch. Then the Mullerthal near Berdorf, the middle around Mersch, and the south around Esch-sur-Alzette and Rumelange.

Every area feels different. The north has forest and valleys. The Mullerthal has rock and sandy paths. The south has red earth and old mining land.

This guide is an example of a destination guide. Distance and climbing for the three trips follow when the final guide is finished.

Where to base yourself

  • Esch-sur-Sûre

A small village on a bend of the river Sûre in the Ardennes in the north, with a castle ruin above it.

  • Diekirch

A town in the north with the National Museum of Military History. A good base for the Ardennes.

  • Berdorf

A village in the Mullerthal, the region known for its sandstone rocks and forest paths.

  • Mersch

A town in the middle of the country. Central, with a station, and a good base for the middle region.

  • Esch-sur-Alzette

The main town of the south, in the old iron-ore mining area. A good base for the red-earth trails.

  • Rumelange

A small town in the south, close to the French border and the old mining landscape.
